What is Custom Analytics?
Custom Analytics replaces the fixed Analytics dashboard with a self-serve analytics engine built into Ask Kira. Instead of choosing from a set of pre-built charts, you can ask any question about your organization's data in plain language and get a complete answer back — with a chart, table, or summary. You can also turn what you learn into a shareable report, or pin charts into a custom dashboard you return to over time.
Who is this for?
Available to organization and sub-org admins — at the school, district, region, or ministry level — across every Kira org. Curriculum leads and instructional coaches with an admin role assignment also have access. Teachers and students do not have access to this.
Part 1: Asking Kira a Question
Open the Analytics page. The Ask Kira chat panel is pinned to the right side.
Ask your question. Type it the way you'd ask a colleague — no special formatting needed. For example: "Kira, which schools have the lowest engagement this month?"
Watch the thinking steps. Kira shows what it's doing (reading schema, running the query) with checkmarks as each step completes.
Review your answer. Kira returns a text summary plus the most useful format for the data, like a chart or table.
Change the chart type if you want a different view. Ask something like "show that as a bar chart" or "give me a table instead."
Ask follow-up questions. Kira remembers the conversation, so you can say "break that down by teacher" or "compare that to last quarter" without repeating context.
Use the quick reply pills. Every response includes 2–3 suggested follow-ups below it.
Rate Kira's response. Every answer generated by Kira includes the option to give a thumbs up or thumbs down and leave feedback. Your input helps Kira continue to learn.
Part 2: Turning Insights into a Report
Ask for a report. For example: "Kira, give me a report on adoption, assessments, and engagement."
Answer Kira's follow-up if needed. If you don't specify topics, Kira will ask what to include.
Review the report preview. It renders inline with a header and one section per topic, each with a narrative summary, chart, and key metrics.
Request changes before exporting. Say things like "add a section on resource usage" or "remove the adoption section."
Export your report. Choose PDF (full rendered report) or CSV (raw data behind each section).
Part 3: Building and Managing Dashboards
Create a dashboard first. Before you can save anything, you need a dashboard to save it to. Create one from the Dashboards tab, or ask Kira directly in chat — "Kira, create a dashboard I can save this chart to."
Name your dashboard when prompted.
Pin a chart. Once your dashboard exists, click the pin icon on any chart in a conversation, or say "add this to the dashboard."
Find your dashboards. Go to Dashboards, nested under Analytics in the sidebar.
Filter by time range. Choose 30 days, 3 months, 6 months, 1 year, or a custom range. This only affects charts with a time dimension — a pie chart of student vs. teacher counts, for example, won't change.
Choose a layout. Grid (2-column, drag to rearrange) or Stack (single column, fixed order).
Keep adding charts from the dashboard itself. Click the Ask Kira button (or the floating Kira icon) to open chat without leaving the page — anything you pin here goes straight into the open dashboard.
Rename, remove, or delete as needed. Click the title to rename inline; use the X on a chart card to remove it (this doesn't delete the underlying data); use the overflow menu to delete the whole dashboard.
Control who can see it. Dashboards are Private by default. Toggle Visible to organization to share it — anyone with analytics access at your level or below can then see and collaboratively edit it. Admins above you in the hierarchy can view but not edit it.
What to Ask Kira
Not sure where to start? Here are common questions by category:
Category | Example questions |
Course Progression |
|
Assessment Performance |
|
Adoption & Engagement |
|
Live Classroom Usage |
|
AI Tutor Usage |
|
Inactivity & At-Risk |
|
Resource Usage |
|
You can also combine any of these into a single report: "Put together a report on adoption and performance I can send to my board."
Getting the Most Out of Every Question
Kira helps you get to the answer, even when a question needs a little adjustment:
Your question is ambiguous or too broad → Kira asks a clarifying question with a few suggested directions.
The data isn't part of your organization's dataset → Kira explains what is available and suggests the closest related question.
You ask Kira to take an action (like assigning a resource) → Kira is read-only for analytics and points you to where that action lives.
You ask about a school or district outside your scope → Kira explains it isn't part of your district and suggests your own schools instead.
Troubleshooting
If your question returned no results…
No data exists for the filters Kira applied — often a narrow time range or a specific school/course combination.
Resolution Steps:
Check which filters Kira named in its response.
Ask Kira to broaden the time range or drop a filter.
Re-ask with fewer dimensions (e.g., remove "by teacher").
If Kira asks you to rephrase or narrow your question…
The question may be too vague, or it may ask for data outside what's currently tracked.
Resolution Steps:
Try rephrasing with a specific metric, school, or time period.
Use one of Kira's suggested quick replies instead.
If Kira points you to a related metric, try asking about that instead.
If your chart only shows some schools, not all of them…
For large result sets, Kira shows the most actionable subset (e.g., bottom 10 for a "which schools are struggling" question) rather than all rows.
Resolution Steps:
Ask Kira to show the full list as a table.
Or download the underlying data as CSV to see every row.
If the data doesn't look current…
Data syncs into the platform on a regular schedule — it's not a live feed.
Resolution Steps:
Reload the dashboard, or change its time range, to re-run the query against the latest synced data.
In chat, ask a new question rather than referring back to an old one — old conversations show a snapshot from when they were originally asked.
If you can't see another school or district's data…
Your access is automatically scoped to your own school, district, or region.
Resolution Steps:
Confirm your assigned scope with your top-level org admin.
If you believe your access should be broader, contact your Kira customer success manager.
If a dashboard shared with you is view-only…
Dashboards shared by an admin above you in your org hierarchy are visible but not editable — only peers at the same level as the creator (or the creator themselves) can edit.
Resolution Steps:
Ask the original creator (or a peer at their level) to make changes.
You can still export the dashboard or use its charts as reference for your own.
