How to Adjust Section Settings

Adjusting your section settings lets you customize and manage your course sections.

Access Section Settings:

  • Click on the gear icon next to the section you want to adjust (on the right side)

Key Settings

  1. General Settings:

  • Section Name: Customize the name of your section

  • Course Progression: Control how students progress through the course content

  • Options: Step Locking, Unit Locking, or Open Locking.

    • Step Locking: Enforces step-by-step progression. Students must complete their current step before moving to the next one.

    • Unit Locking: Locks the next unit until all steps in the current unit are completed. This ensures students complete all required steps in sequence.

    • Open Locking: Allows students to access all steps up to a specific lock point, regardless of prior completions.

  • To adjust these settings:

    1. Navigate to your dashboard.

    2. Click the gear icon next to the section you want to modify and select Settings.

    3. On the Settings page, locate the locking options.

    4. Choose the desired locking setting:

      • Step: Enforces step-by-step progression.

      • Unit: Requires completion of all steps in a unit before progressing.

      • Open: Unlocks all steps up to a specific lock point.

    5. Save your changes.

  • This tool ensures students follow the curriculum in a structured manner, preventing them from skipping ahead and missing crucial information.

  • Archive or delete section

  • It's a best practice to archive your sections at the end of a grading period to eliminate room for confusion and keep your dashboard neat and tidy.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

Why are all lessons in a unit locked even though I set a lock point?

If the locking setting is set to Unit, the next unit will remain locked until all steps in the current unit are completed. This includes any ungraded items or incomplete steps. To resolve this:

  1. Check for incomplete steps in the current unit.

  2. Complete or grade any ungraded items.

  3. If you want to allow access up to a specific step regardless of prior completions, change the locking setting to Open in the section settings.
