Getting Started with Action Tiles

This article covers what Action Tiles are, when to use them, and how to create one.

Updated today

Action Tiles let you create custom, interactive activities for your students just by describing what you want. Instead of choosing from a preset list of exercise types, you tell Kira what you need and it builds the activity right inside your lesson.

What is an Action Tile?

An Action Tile is an interactive activity that Kira generates on the fly based on your prompt. It appears directly inside your lesson and students can engage with it in real time.

Every tile is built specifically for the concept you're teaching — not pulled from a template. A few examples of what teachers have created:

A few examples of what teachers have created:

  1. A drag-and-drop activity sorting examples of figurative language by type

  2. An interactive timeline where students place historical events in order

  3. A matching game connecting fractions to their decimal equivalents

  4. A visual sorting activity for classifying living and non-living things

If you can describe it, Kira can build it.

What to know before you start

Student responses are not currently saved or sent to you. Action Tiles are designed for real-time practice and engagement, not graded submission. If you need a gradable activity, use a different activity type in your lesson.

Submissions and grading via Action Tiles will be coming soon.

When to use Action Tiles

Action Tiles work well when you want to:

  • Give students a way to actively engage with a concept rather than just read about it

  • Check for understanding in a low-stakes, interactive way

  • Offer a different format for a concept that does not fit neatly into a standard quiz or worksheet

  • Add a quick practice moment mid-lesson without interrupting the flow

How to create an Action Tile

Option 1: From the editor chat

  1. Open your lesson in the Kira editor.

  2. In the chat panel, describe the activity you want. For example: "Create an activity where students practice identifying the main idea and supporting details."

  3. Kira generates the tile and inserts it into your lesson.

  4. Preview the tile. If you want changes, follow up in chat: "Make it more visual" or "Simplify the instructions for 3rd grade."

  5. When you're satisfied, the tile is ready for students.

Option 2: From the toolbar

  1. Open your lesson in the Kira editor.

  2. Click the Action Tiles icon in the toolbar. The Configure Action Tile Settings panel will open.

  3. In the Activity Instructions field, describe what you want students to do. For example: "Match fractions to their decimal equivalents" or "Practice addition with visual aids."

    • Not sure where to start? Click Try Example to see a sample prompt.

    • Want help refining your prompt? Click Improve Prompt after entering your instructions.

  4. Optionally, select a Grade Level from the dropdown to tailor the activity's language and complexity.

  5. Click Generate. Kira builds the activity and inserts it into your lesson.

  6. Preview the tile before sharing it with students.

Option 3: From the homepage

  1. From the Kira homepage, select Action Tiles

  2. Enter your prompt and select the lesson you want to add it to

  3. Kira generates the tile and adds it to the lesson you selected

Tips for writing a good prompt

You do not need to be precise or technical. Kira will interpret your intent and build something appropriate. That said, a little context helps:

  • Include the concept or skill. "Practice identifying story structure" is more useful than "a reading activity."

  • Mention your grade level. Selecting a grade level in the settings will produce simpler language and instructions for younger students.

  • Describe the format if you have one in mind. "A drag-and-drop," "a matching activity," "something visual" will steer the output.

  • If the first result is not right, just ask for a change. You do not need to start over. Follow up in chat and Kira will adjust
