Teachers have been asking us about the grading percentages and weighting of assessment categories in the HS Intro to CS - Python course, so here is some information you might find helpful.
Currently, we don’t weight any of the scores in our courses - a point is just worth a point. But we know that the need for weighting grading categories varies from school to school, so we have compiled information about total points across different categories.
Here are the grading breakdowns for different categories of assessments in the course, first by assignment type:
Points |
Percent |
|
Points in lesson steps (e.g., written reflections, coding exercises, etc.) |
324 |
27% |
Lesson assessments |
315 |
26% |
Unit assessments |
190 |
16% |
Project assessments |
194 |
16% |
Midterm and final exams |
191 |
16% |
Total in course |
1214 |
100% |
And here is the breakdown by effort/correctness, separating written reflections and other effort-based assignments from questions that are graded for correctness, like multiple choice questions and auto-graded code exercises:
Points |
Percent |
|
Assignments graded for effort / completion (mostly written reflections) |
159 |
13% |
Assignments graded for correctness |
1054 |
87% |
Total in course |
1214 |
100% |
These percentages represent the raw makeup of the course, but you may choose to weight grades to give more impact to specific categories. You are likely able to adjust the weights of different assignments or assignment category via LMS, SIS, or any other learning or grade management system that may be in use at your school (such as Powerschool, Schoology, Skyward, etc). This would override the percentages in the Kira gradebook and these charts.
There are no assignments or assessments in the course that are specifically designated for homework, so homework is not broken out as a grades category here.
We hope this information is helpful for syllabi, sharing with parents, etc.! Please let us know if there is other information about the course or the grading that you have questions about, at @support@kira-learning.com.
