The Kira Gradebook

The Kira Gradebook is where you track, calculate and report your students’ grades. It now matches how your course is set up. This article covers what’s new and how to use each feature.

Important: excused work is now calculated differently

Excused work no longer counts as full credit. It’s now left out of the grade. This change isn’t retroactive, so anything you excused before this update still counts as full credit. Excuses can’t be undone. Learn how excusing works.

1. How the Gradebook follows your course

To open the Gradebook, go to Classes, open your class, and select the Gradebook tab.

The Gradebook follows your course structure, including any changes you’ve made. Each unit’s resources are listed underneath it, in the same order as your course. Click the three dots in a unit’s header to collapse or expand it. To expand or collapse every unit at once, use Units in the toolbar. You can also freeze columns so they stay in view while you scroll.

The Gradebook covers lessons, resources and assessments. Standalone activities, such as assessments, are grouped in their own view. Use the drop down menu at the top of the Gradebook to switch between your course and your standalone activities.

2. What the icons mean

Each grade cell shows the score, plus an icon when something needs your attention.

Icon

What it means

Not released

Not graded

Not submitted

Submitted late

Excused

Released

A cell can show more than one icon. For example, work that was submitted late and hasn’t been released shows both icons.

3. The toolbar: search, filter, units and display

The toolbar at the top right of the Gradebook has four tools:

  • Search: find a student quickly.

  • Filter: show only the work and students you need. You can filter by:

    • Submission status: Not released, Not graded, Not submitted, Submitted late, Excused or Released. Each status shows a count, and you can select more than one.

    • Current progress: by percentage. Choose a preset, such as over 50%, or set your own range.

    • Current grade: by letter grade. Choose a preset letter, or set your own range.

    • Past due: only work that’s past due as of a date you choose, such as today.

A purple dot next to Filter means a filter is on. Click Clear filter to show everything again.

  • Units: choose which units and resources appear in the Gradebook.

    • Check or uncheck a unit to show or hide all its resources at once, or check individual lessons, activities and assessments.

    • Use the search bar to find a unit or resource quickly.

    • Click Expand all or Collapse all to open or close every unit in the Gradebook.

    • The count at the bottom shows how many resources are showing, for example “All 54 resources shown.”

    • Click Reset to show everything again.

  • Display: choose how grades are shown: points, percentage or letter grade.

Click the expand icon (⤢) next to the toolbar to view the Gradebook full screen.

Missing resources or students? Check Units to make sure everything is selected, and look for a purple dot next to Filter, which means a filter is on.

4. Sorting and class averages

  • Sort: sort the Student column by first or last name.

  • Class averages: the Class average row sits at the top, above your students.

5. Progress and grade

Progress and grade are shown in separate columns:

  • Current progress shows how much work a student has completed.

  • Current grade shows how well they did.

Both count work that’s already due, plus work the student completed or that was graded early. Work without a due date is automatically given one, one month after it’s assigned.

6. Side panels

Side panels explain any number without leaving the Gradebook.

Click a student’s name to open a summary of that student across your course:

  • Progress and grade: the student’s progress (how many items they’ve submitted, as a count and a percentage) and their grade (as a percentage and letter, compared with the class average). Click ⇅ next to either one to switch between Current and Course. Work that isn’t due yet is left out of Current.

  • To do: work for this student that still needs attention, split into two tabs:

    • To grade: work waiting to be graded

    • To release: graded work that hasn’t been released yet

    Each tab shows a count.

  • Unit breakdown: each unit’s progress and grade. Expand a unit to see every lesson, resource and assessment in it.

Click expand to open the full summary, where you can click Print, which is handy for parent meetings.

Select a student’s score, then click the → that appears in the cell, to see the details for that piece of work:

  • the unit it belongs to, its type and due date, and whether it’s past due

  • how many questions they’ve submitted, and their score

  • each question, with its score and status. Expand a question to see when the student submitted it (marked with the Submitted late icon if late), any feedback, and buttons to View question in Grading Studio or Excuse question.

From here you can also click Release grades (when there are grades to release), Excuse lesson for [student name] (Learn how excusing works) or Copy all scores.

In either panel, use the ↑ and ↓ arrows to move to the previous or next student, and ✕ to close it.

7. Releasing grades

When you release grades from the Gradebook, Kira opens the work in Grading Studio so you always see exactly what you’re releasing.

  1. Select a student’s score for work that has grades not released yet (these show the Not released icon), then click the → that appears in the cell.

  2. In the panel that opens, click Release grades. The button only appears when there are grades to release.

  3. Grading Studio opens in a new tab, with the student already selected, so you can see the full question and the student’s answer.

  4. Release the grade in Grading Studio.

The Gradebook updates automatically.

Not sure what’s ready to release? Click a student’s name and open the To release tab under To do, or filter by Not released in the toolbar.

8. Copying grades into your district system

Before you copy: student names aren’t copied, only grades. Sort the Kira Gradebook to match the order of your district system first, so each grade lines up with the right student.

  1. Click a cell to select it.

  2. Drag to select a range of cells. A bar appears at the bottom showing how many cells are selected.

  3. Click Copy in that bar, or press Ctrl+C (Cmd+C on Mac).

  4. Paste into your district system.

What you copy matches the format you’re viewing: points, percentage or letter grade. To copy a different format, click Display in the toolbar at the top right and change it first. To copy every score for one lesson, use Copy all scores in the side panel.

9. Exporting grades

Exports include only what’s currently shown in the Gradebook, matching your filters, the units and resources you’ve selected, and your display format. To export one student, search or filter for that student first.

  1. Click Export at the top of the Gradebook.

  2. Check the line at the top of the window. It shows how many students you’re exporting and in which format, for example “24 of 24 students · Points format.”

  3. Choose a score breakdown:

    • Summary: one column per resource, plus unit totals, progress and grade.

    • Detailed: one column per question inside each resource, plus unit totals, progress and grade.

  4. Click Download.
